There are things going on in schools that government and the news don’t tell you. And they won’t ever tell you because education crisis sells way too well and is too much of a campaign winner. And also because it is much more lucrative to make you believe that your kids have some kind of new syndrome or disease that means that they can’t make it!
Well, guess what? That is all BS!
What is going on is way simpler but it wouldn’t be too cool to admit it. You see the reality is that schools are out of sync with what is going on in the world. In an attempt to catch up with the fast pace that kids like to function with nowadays, schools totally miss out on very simple, basic life skills.
The way the school system works now is pretty much the same that it was when you went to school or when your parents went to school. Ok, there are a few different activities and approaches but the basic curriculum is still the same. Reading, writing, math…
This is what the primary role of schools ever was: Teaching the things that parents were not necessarily experts in. And it worked fine up to a few decades ago, when there was at least one parent left at home to teach all the rest: Character, good citizenship, and all these essential life skills such as organization, time management, priorities, deadlines and so on.
But the problem is that in our society, most parents don’t have time for this anymore. They think that schools are going to teach their kids all that. And you know what the ironic thing is: schools still think that parents are doing it… Or at least SHOULD do it!
Yes, you’ve been barking up the wrong tree all that time. Your kids are not dumb! They are not limited in any way. A tutor won’t make a difference!
What’s happening is that your kids are wasting the first 5 minutes of every class either looking for their book or pens! So they miss out on what is being said and then they are lost!
Or their mind is occupied by the fact that they are totally unprepared for their next test… why? Because they forgot their book at school. Or because they know that 25 minutes out of the 45 they spent “studying” were actually spent on Skype or Facebook.
But you see, you are assuming that kids are taught to study, that they are taught to make priorities, that they are taught to organize their bagand that they are taught these things early on… But they are NOT!
Because it is YOUR job! That is what schools expect!
There is a MAJOR COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN between schools and parents! Both parties think that these essential skills are taught by the other! Schools expect parents to know exactly what their kids need to do. Parents expect their kids to learn everything they need for life atschool.
So we’re stuck!
Well, not quite. There is good news! The reality is that it is never too late and not that hard to correct!
What if you knew what goes on in the teacher’s mind? Wouldn’t that help? You’d know what the expectations are and you’d be able to make it happen!
Because let’s face it, what we are talking about is not exactly rocket science! Like knowing where your pen is! Or packing your backpack the night before school, instead of doing it last minute!
Here’s the thing: after 20 years of teaching, I’ve pretty much seen it all. And kids are the same everywhere you go. I taught in 5 different countries and I experienced the same issue:
There is a definite gap between what schools expect from parentsand what parents actually do to prepare their kids. And no education system has yet managed to fill that gap!
So if you had a simple manual, telling you what the main expectations are, what would you say? A step by step guide that would help you know what to teach your kids so that their life at school is made easier, strategies that teachers use in classrooms and that can be used in your family.
Well, I’ll let you decide. But first let me tell you this: The few parents who manage to teach these skills to their kids are doing them a huge favor. They are also doing themselves a huge favor!
Because here’s what happens when you don’t: your kids get discouraged, they feel like they are the dumb ass of the class, then they start doing less and here they go in a down-spiral. Their motivation goes and forget it!
Oh and then, teachers will start wondering if they have learning difficulties and you will have them tested and they might find a milddisability or something, and then your kids are going to be reassured because they now have an explanation, so it is ok to have lower grades because there is an actual reason… And that is before they tell you to have your kids on medication! Hey, what’s a few more chemicals in their bodies?!
What I can tell you is this: in all my career, I have seen kids who were not actually that smart who did very well at school because they had mastered those skills.
And I also saw way smarter kids with lower grades because they hadn’t.
