Student development material:

The SIP is a self-analysis form that your kids can use to first identify the issues they are facing and then move their focus in 3 steps towards an action plan and targets to reach to see improvement and change.  The aim is to have kids take responsibility for who they are and who they want to be.

The example shown would be more appropriate for pre-teens or teenagers based on the choice of more advanced vocabulary.  This can be done with children of all ages and can be adapted to match their level of understanding.

Use this as a way to empower your kids with more responsibility towards their own work at school and at home.  Use it for a maximum of 3 weeks in a row so that it doesn't become like crutches the can rest on and fall back into bad habits as soon as it is over.  You can start with a new one a few months later if needs be.

Check this example to make your own below.

Use this blank copy for your personal use.  Follow the process explained in the previous document to select your goals and targets.  This usually takes about 15-20 minutes.

This is used for close monitoring of your kid's progress on a small number of specific issues.  You will find the user guide in this document so that you can make up your own customized version below, for use at school or at home or both.

Organization tools:

The lack of skills regarding the use of the school planner/agenda is worrying amongst kids of all ages.  If those skills are mastered, most problems get tackled straight away.  Use these little tips to teach your kids how to use their planner in the most efficient manner.  To fully understand this file, it is advisable to read the sub section called "Planner" under "Organization and Involvement" in Chapter II of Better At School, the book.

Limit your kids' school bag contents!  Use a checklist to make sure the essential stuff is in, and all the rest is out!  You will save your kids' energy and a lot of money in buying less bags throughout the school year!

Use this to add the items your child needs in his/her own bag.

For kids who have organization problems, have a look at this example of a list they can take with them to school.

If the items mentioned on this list work with you, use it!  All your kid will need to do is take it out at the beginning of each class and check all the items as he/she takes them out of the bag.

If the previous document didn't quite correspond to the supplies your kids need, you can make up your own.  This, used alongside with the bag checklist, should start your kids off onto the right path towards success.

"Ms. Bernard was a crucial aspect of my son’s academic success.  She managed to instill a sense of responsibility in his daily tasks as well as an increased desire to succeed.  She started a daily routine that provided him guidance and goals to follow through with.  She is motivational and has a tremendous sense of understanding.  My son’s success last year was attributed to her compatibility with my son’s individual needs.  I trust she will bring on to others the same dedication and assertiveness that she provided to us.  She is a key role in what the vocation of teaching and guidance should be."
